-patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs

-flags, on clothing too

2. Disdain for human rights

-human rights ignored in cases of "need" i.e. Fear of enemies, security

-approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations

3. Identification of enemies as unifying cause

-people rally together over perceived common threat/foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities, liberals, communists, socialists, terrorists

4. Supremacy of military

-military gets so much gov't money

-soldiers and military service glamorized

5. Widespread sexism

-governments male-dominated 

-rigid gender roles

-oppose abortion

-homophobia, anti-gay legislation

6. Controlled mass media

-censorship, esp in wartime 

-some directly controlled by gov't; other times media spokespeople

7. Obsession w/ national security

-fear used as motivational tool by gov't over masses

8. Religion and gov't intertwined

-use most common religion to manipulate public opinion

-religious rhetoric commonly used, even if religion/leaders against gov't policies

9. Corporate power protected

-industrial and business aristocracy put leaders into power, so they are in with the gov't

10. Labor power suppressed

-organizing power of labor only real threat, so no labor unions

11. Disdain for intellectuals and arts

-hostility toward higher education

-professors censored, imprisoned

-gov't won't fund arts

12. Obsession with crime and punishment

-limitless power to enforce laws

-forego civil liberties in name of patriotism 

-national police

-friends appoint friends in gov't

-natural resources/treasures taken by leaders

14. Fraudulent elections

-judiciaries manipulate elections

-smear campaigns against opposing candidates 

-legislation to control voting numbers, manipulate media
