Divine Comedy

Dante's Divine Comedy is not presented here as a medieval religious narrative, but as a conceptual framework for understanding the structures of contemporary civilisation.

Living inside the twenty-first century, we rarely gain the distance needed to recognise the forces that shape our societies. This project proposes visual art as a way of observing our own era from the outside.

Drawing upon decades of work in painting, sociology and political thought, Dags Vidulejs develops a distinctive visual language in which anthropomorphic forms dissolve into abstract rhythmic structures. These forms do not portray individuals; they represent recurring social patterns, systems of power, cooperation, conflict and solidarity that emerge across human civilisation.

The three symbolic realms — Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise — are interpreted as metaphors for different modes of social organisation. Inferno reflects structures dominated by coercion, corruption, fear and the pursuit of power. Purgatory represents the civic sphere, where responsibility, law, dialogue and personal transformation remain possible. Paradise symbolises communities built upon compassion, creativity, generosity and the pursuit of the common good.

Rather than illustrating Dante's text, this exhibition transforms his philosophical architecture into a contemporary visual chronicle, inviting viewers to reflect on the ethical and structural choices that define our shared future.
